01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
When the bowl arrives, the vinegared rice underneath is completely invisible beneath an abundant stack of seafood. Tucked into a Shiba shopping street, Sushi Yoshi draws most of its lunchtime visitors for this single, generously packed bowl of chirashi sushi. Well over a dozen toppings are layered tightly together: substantial slices of medium-fatty tuna and white fish, rich salmon and amberjack, gently sweetened simmered conger eel, mantis shrimp, octopus, and bright slices of rolled omelet.
Work your way through the seafood heap, and the sushi rice beneath reveals thoughtful preparation of its own. It comes tossed with shredded nori, toasted sesame seeds, and plenty of shirasu (baby whitebait), imparting a savory, aromatic depth whether enjoyed alongside the cuts of fish or by the mouthful on its own. Working with the small dipping dish on the counter, savoring each cut's distinct texture, and pausing for sips of hot tea offer a satisfying respite in the middle of a busy workday.
Carrying years of history, the restaurant's weathered interior and the master's warm hospitality create a deeply relaxed setting. Because he runs the entire operation on his own, quantities are limited, and lunchtime seats frequently fill up through phone reservations in advance. It is best to call ahead to confirm availability, arriving ready to savor an unhurried, bountiful bowl.
